Lexis Brisbane – Savouring the Flavours of Ardo’s City Winery – 16.02.2024

Friday afternoons at Lexis English Brisbane are always filled with anticipation and excitement, but this particular Friday held the promise of something truly special. At Lexis, we love to get our student’s input on what they would like to see on our activity calendar.  So when our lovely student Blanche mentioned she worked at the local City Winery, we jumped at the opportunity to benefit from her expertise!  Blanche is a wine guide, who’s been working with City Winery for around 10 months.  Hailing from France, she has a great passion for wine and enjoys the process of its creation, from gathering the grapes at the beginning, to the final product where you can smell the hints of other flavours such as watermelon or olive.  She believes wine is more than just an alcohol, but an artform!

So, along with expert wine guide, our esteemed teachers Nikki, Jayne, and Nina, led a group of curious students on a delightful wine-tasting experience at the renowned Ardo’s City Winery in the heart of Brisbane City. With eagerness in our hearts and a thirst for knowledge (as well as wine!), we set out from campus to explore the world of fine wines.

Nestled on Edward Street, Ardo’s City Winery greeted us with open arms and a warm ambiance that immediately put us at ease. The rustic charm of the winery, coupled with the stunning artwork adorning its walls, created the perfect setting for an afternoon of indulgence and discovery. As we settled into our seats, the air buzzed with excitement, and we couldn’t wait to begin our journey into the realm of wine.

Our adventure commenced with a tantalizing WHITE Pinot Gris 2022 from the picturesque Adelaide Hills. Barrel-fermented to perfection, this crisp and dry wine enchanted us with its delicate aromas of jasmine, pears, and tropical fruits. We learned that the grapes, lovingly sourced from South Australia, retained their pinkish hue due to their skins being kept intact during the journey to Brisbane—a fascinating insight into the winemaking process that added an extra layer of appreciation to our tasting experience.

Next on our itinerary was a vibrant ROSÉ Grenache Rosé 2022, hailing from the sun-kissed vineyards of McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills. A harmonious blend of Grenache, Merlot, Sangiovese, and Tempranillo, this rosé captivated our senses with its delightful medley of strawberry, raspberry, cranberry, and watermelon flavours, all underscored by a refreshing citrus finish. It was like summer in a glass, and we found ourselves instantly transported to lazy afternoons under the sun.

As we delved deeper into the world of wine, we transitioned to the robust REDS, beginning with a GSM 2022 from McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley. Comprising Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro, this wine seduced us with its enticing aromas of rhubarb and white pepper, offering a smooth and dry palate that left us longing for more. It was the perfect introduction to red wines for many of us, striking a delicate balance between approachability and complexity.

Our tasting journey culminated in the grand finale—a Shiraz 2021 from the prestigious Barossa Valley. Rich and full-bodied, this wine unfolded on the palate with notes of red and black fruits, accented by hints of vanilla and Tabasco leaf, and culminating in a lingering black olive finish. It was a wine of depth and character, perfect for savouring on its own or pairing with a hearty meal—a true testament to the craftsmanship of the winemakers.

Throughout our tasting experience, we engaged in lively discussions, sharing our thoughts and impressions of each wine and reveling in the camaraderie that comes with exploring new flavours together. While preferences varied among us, there was unanimous agreement on one thing—the rosé stole the show with its irresistible charm and refreshing appeal.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Blanche and the entire team for their warm hospitality and expert guidance, making our wine-tasting experience truly unforgettable.
