What is the C2 Proficiency (CPE) exam?

Cambridge’s highest English qualification: proof of mastery. Who it’s for and how to prepare.

In a nutshell

C2 Proficiency (formerly the Certificate of Proficiency in English, or CPE) is Cambridge’s highest qualification: it proves mastery of English, level C2 on the CEFR.

It demonstrates near-native command for the most demanding academic and professional settings. The certificate never expires.

Who is C2 Proficiency for?

C2 Proficiency suits learners who already operate at a very high level and want the ultimate proof of it, for top universities, postgraduate study, or senior professional roles. At C2 you understand virtually everything you read and hear, and express yourself precisely and fluently in any context.

💡 Most students don’t need C2. B2 First or C1 Advanced is enough for the majority of university and visa requirements: C2 Proficiency is for those specifically aiming at the very top. Unsure? Check the CEFR levels or take a placement test.

How hard is it, and how long to prepare?

C2 Proficiency is the most demanding Cambridge exam. It tests subtlety, range and accuracy at near-native level. Students typically prepare with a focused 10–12 week course (often after passing C1 Advanced), concentrating on advanced writing and the nuanced Use of English tasks. You should already be comfortably at C1 before aiming for C2.

C2 Proficiency: frequently asked questions

Is CPE the same as C2 Proficiency?
Yes. “CPE” (Certificate of Proficiency in English) is the former name; Cambridge now calls it C2 Proficiency. It’s the same exam.
Do I need C2 Proficiency?
Probably not, most universities and visas accept B2 or C1. C2 Proficiency is for learners who specifically want to prove mastery at the highest level, e.g. for elite programs or certain professional contexts.
How is it different from C1 Advanced?
C2 certifies the level above C1, near-native mastery rather than advanced competence. Sit C2 only once you’re comfortably performing at C1.
CPE or IELTS 8–9?
Both signal a very high level. Choose C2 Proficiency for a lifelong mastery certificate; choose IELTS if you need a specific band score on record. See IELTS vs Cambridge.
