IELTS band scores explained

What the 1–9 scale means, how your overall band is calculated, and the score you’ll need.

The short answer

IELTS reports your English on a scale from 1 (non-user) to 9 (expert), in half-band steps (5.5, 6.0, 6.5…). You get a band for each skill, Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking: and an overall band that’s the average of the four.

Most universities ask for 6.0–7.0 overall; many also set a minimum in each skill. There’s no “pass” or “fail”, just the band you achieve.

The nine bands

What each band says about your English.

BandLabelWhat it means
9ExpertFull operational command: fluent, accurate, complete understanding
8Very goodFully operational; only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies
7GoodOperational command; occasional inaccuracies in unfamiliar situations
6CompetentEffective command despite some inaccuracies: copes with complex language
5ModestPartial command; handles overall meaning in most situations
4LimitedBasic competence limited to familiar situations
3Extremely limitedConveys & understands only general meaning in very familiar situations
1–2Intermittent / Non-userLittle or no real ability to use English

How your overall band is calculated

Your overall band is the average of the four skill bands, rounded to the nearest half. The rounding catches people out:

6.5 + 6.5 + 5.0 + 7.0 = 25 ÷ 4 = 6.25 → rounds up to 6.5

4.0 + 3.5 + 4.0 + 4.0 = 15.5 ÷ 4 = 3.875 → rounds up to 4.0

!An average ending in .25 rounds up to .5; .75 rounds up to the next whole band.

⚠️ Many institutions also require a minimum in each skill (e.g. “6.5 overall, no band below 6.0”). Always check both numbers.

What score will you need?

A rough guide, your exact requirement depends on the institution or visa.

GoalTypical IELTSCEFR
Vocational / pathway courses5.5B2

Postgraduate degree6.5 – 7.0B2–C1

How to move up a band

Raising your IELTS band is about technique as much as English: knowing the task types, timing, and exactly what examiners reward in Writing and Speaking. Targeted preparation typically lifts a band over 4–12 weeks, faster when you also build underlying level with General English.

IELTS bands: frequently asked questions

What is a good IELTS score?
It depends on your goal, but 7.0+ is generally considered strong, 6.0–6.5 meets most undergraduate requirements, and 5.5 suits many pathway courses. “Good” really means “meets the requirement you need”.
Can you fail IELTS?
No, IELTS reports the band you achieve, so there’s no pass or fail. You either meet the score an institution requires, or you don’t (yet).
How long is an IELTS result valid?
Most institutions treat IELTS results as valid for about two years. If you need permanent proof of level instead, consider a Cambridge qualification.
Is half a band a big difference?
It can be, many requirements hinge on exactly 6.0 vs 6.5, and rounding means a single skill can change your overall band. Targeted prep is often the difference.
