To conclude a fantastic first week back, we held an Aussie Beer Tasting activity! Students got to taste and critique seven Australian beers: Stone & Wood Pacific Ale, Stone & Wood Green Coast, Victoria Bitter VB, Yulli’s Amanda Mandarin IPA, Little Creatures’ Pale Ale, Coopers Sparkling Ale and White Rabbit Dark Ale.
In Australia (and the majority of English-speaking countries), beer is part of the culture and there are some unique expressions that are helpful to understand. Australians like having a few bevvies, a coldie or a couple of cold ones.
Students received handouts showing images of foods that corresponded to the flavours present in each beer. Students were encouraged to refer to the food images when tasting each beer and to think if any of those flavours came through for them.
Students discussed their thoughts and answered the activity worksheet questions.
At the conclusion of the activity the answers were reveal and many proved to have a discerning palate. Beer tasting was highly interactive and an excellent way for students to practise their English in a very fun, relaxed setting.
