As the calendar turns to April, students at Lexis Manly, like many across Australia and New Zealand, prepare to commemorate a significant day in the nations’ history. Anzac Day is held each year on April 25th, and pays tribute to the Australian and New Zealand army corps who fought bravely in the Gallipoli campaign during the First World War.

Anzac Day holds a special place in the hearts of Australians and New Zealanders, marked by ceremonies, marches, and the iconic symbol of remembrance – the red poppy. At Lexis Manly, our students are commemorating Anzac Day this year through creativity, by crafting and painting beautiful red poppies..

🌹 Why Poppies?

The tradition of wearing poppies on ANZAC Day stems from the famous poem “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, which speaks of the red poppies that grew over the graves of fallen soldiers in World War I. Today, the poppy serves as a powerful symbol of remembrance, honouring the sacrifices of those who have served in wars.Whatsapp Image 2024 04 24 At 2.52.42 Pm 2 E1713936310679

🌸 Learning about history:

At Lexis Manly, our students came together to create their own poppies as a way to connect with the history and significance of Anzac Day. Engaging in creative activities like crafting not only allows students to express themselves artistically but also provides a platform for meaningful conversations about history, sacrifice, and the importance of remembering and honouring those who have served. It’s a way to acknowledge the importance of Anzac Day while encouraging students to actively participate in commemorating this important day.Whatsapp Image 2024 04 24 At 2.52.27 Pm 2 E1713936392165

🌷 Commemorating Anzac Day

Beyond the artistic aspect, our poppy crafting session at Lexis Manly offered valuable learning experiences. Students delved into the historical context of Anzac Day, exploring its significance and relevance in today’s world. They also engaged in conversations about the broader themes of remembrance, gratitude, and the impact of war on individuals and societies.
