At Lexis English, we’re always on the lookout for exciting ways to immerse ourselves in Australian culture. What better way to do that than through a fun-filled activity that combines tasting delicious Aussie food with testing our Australia knowledge through trivia? Today we took our students on a journey trying Australian food and putting their Aussie trivia skills to the test.
Our adventure began with a selection of Aussie treats laid out for our eager students to sample. From savory spreads to sweet delights, each dish offered a glimpse into the diverse culinary landscape of Australia. Here are some highlights of the mouthwatering spread:
- Vegemite: A true Aussie icon, Vegemite sparked curiosity and intrigue among our international students. As they cautiously spread a thin layer of this savory spread on toast, their reactions ranged from surprise to delight. Some declared it an instant favourite, while others found it an acquired taste worth trying again.
- Caramello Koalas: A brand of chocolate treat currently manufactured by Cadbury Australia. It consists of a chocolate cartoon koala with a caramel centre.
- Lamingtons: The soft, spongey texture of lamingtons coated in chocolate and coconut transported our taste buds to a blissful state. As students indulged in these delectable treats, they couldn’t help but appreciate the simplicity and elegance of this Aussie classic.
- Anzac Biscuits: Rich in history and flavor, Anzac biscuits provided a nostalgic taste of wartime Australia. With their hearty oatmeal base and golden syrup sweetness, these cookies left a lasting impression on our students.
- Meat Pies: In Australia, a meat pie is a hand-sized pie containing diced or minced meat and gravy, sometimes with onion, mushrooms, or cheese and is often consumed as a takeaway food snack. Australians like to top a meat pie with tomato sauce.
- Fairy Bread: Is sliced white bread spread with butter or margarine and covered with “Hundreds and Thousands“, often served at children’s parties in Australia and is typically cut into triangles.
While trying the foods, the students put their knowledge of Australian culture to the test with a lively trivia session. Teams of two formed, and the competition heated up as students eagerly answered questions ranging from Aussie slang to national landmarks. Following the Trivia , three victorious teams emerged. In order to determine the ultimate winner, the questions continued until a heated final round concluded.
Ultimately, Philip and Lucien emerged as the champions, each earning a prize package consisting of Tim Tams, an Aussie stubbie holder, and a Koala clip.
Congratulations guys, well done!
As our food tasting and trivia activity came to an end, it was clear that we had embarked on a journey of discovery and delight. Through the flavours of Vegemite and the trivia of Australian history, our students gained a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of Aussie culture. At Lexis English, we believe that learning extends beyond the classroom walls, and what better way to learn than through food, fun, and friendship? So here’s to embracing Australian culture – one bite and trivia question at a time!
