From the Classroom to the Kitchen: Learning with a Sprinkle of Fun
On May 2nd, the students at Lexis English Brisbane swapped their notebooks for mugs and their pens for spoons in a delightful activity that brought the warmth of home baking into the classroom—Microwave Mug Cake Making! It was an afternoon filled with sweet aromas, delicious creativity, and plenty of laughter as our ESL students tried their hand at whipping up their very own mug cakes.
With just a few simple ingredients, a microwave, and a whole lot of enthusiasm, students got to make personal-sized cakes in minutes. This fun and tasty activity was not just about baking—it was about building friendships, practising English in a real-life context, and enjoying a shared experience that everyone could take part in, regardless of their cooking skills. Whether someone had never baked before or considered themselves a mini master chef, the mug cake session was a success for all.
Flavours, Flour, and Friends: A Recipe for Joy
Students had a mouth-watering menu to choose from, including classic chocolate, comforting banana, spiced apple cinnamon, and the crowd-favourite—Nutella! Once ingredients were gathered, the real fun began. Each student followed a simple step-by-step guide to mix their batter right in the mug, and then popped it into the microwave.
The results? Let’s just say they were as diverse as our student body! Some cakes rose beautifully like they belonged in a bakery window, while others stayed a little shy—but every single one was delicious. The best part? Watching everyone’s reactions as their mugs transformed before their eyes, followed by happy bites and lots of “mmm!” sounds echoing across the room.
It wasn’t just about the cakes, though. As students stirred their mixtures, they chatted in English, shared laughs over uneven cakes, compared flavours, and even exchanged tips and vocabulary. It was language learning disguised as dessert—and it worked like a charm.
The Secret Ingredient: Connection
While mug cakes were the stars of the day, the real magic happened in the connections being made. Students from Japan, Spain, Brazil, Turkey, Korea, and beyond worked side by side, helping one another with measurements, encouraging each other, and—of course—sharing selfies of their sweet creations. The afternoon quickly turned into a mini cultural celebration, with everyone bringing a little bit of their personality into their mug.
