Exploring Culture and Coastlines: A week at Lexis Byron Bay
Last week was a vibrant one for students at Lexis Byron Bay, filled with culture, music, nature, and unforgettable coastal views.
Didgeridoo Workshop with Prahlad
On Wednesday, students had the unique opportunity to dive into a piece of ancient Australian culture with a didgeridoo workshop. Led by the talented Prahlad, the session introduced students to this fascinating instrument and gave them hands-on experience in playing it.
The didgeridoo is a wind instrument developed by Aboriginal Australians more than 1,000 years ago. Traditionally made from eucalyptus branches hollowed out by termites, it produces a deep, resonant drone that’s both powerful and meditative. It’s considered one of the oldest musical instruments still in use today and holds great spiritual and cultural significance, often used in ceremonies, storytelling, and healing practices.
Over the course of an hour, students learned the basics of creating sound, breathing techniques, and even some rhythmic patterns. It was a joyful, eye-opening experience that connected them to the rich cultural heritage of Australia.
Lighthouse Walk and Whale Watching
Then on Friday afternoon, a group of students joined Rita for the famous Cape Byron Lighthouse walk. The weather was perfect—clear blue skies, warm sun, and a light breeze made it the ideal day to explore the easternmost point of the Australian mainland.
As we reached the Cape Byron Lighthouse, the view was absolutely breathtaking. From the top, we spotted whales breaching in the distance—it’s migration season, so we were lucky to catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures making their way along the coast!
