Today, we dove into a heartwarming student activity that honoured a significant Australian tradition: ANZAC Day.

ANZAC Day, observed on April 25th each year, commemorates the courage and sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) soldiers who served in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. It holds a special place in the hearts of Australians, symbolising unity, resilience, and remembrance.

Our lovely students at Lexis Brisbane embarked on a meaningful activity to mark ANZAC Day. They crafted intricate origami poppy flowers, a poignant symbol associated with honoring fallen soldiers. The poppy’s significance stems from World War I battlefields, where red poppies flourished amid the devastation, inspiring the famous poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae.

Using these handmade poppies, our students created a stunning flower wreath. Wreaths are commonly laid at memorials and ceremonies on ANZAC Day, representing a collective tribute to those who served and sacrificed for their countries.

Australia’s ANZAC Day traditions encompass various commemorative events, including dawn services, marches, and moments of silence. The dawn service holds particular importance, echoing the quiet moments before soldiers went into battle and symbolizing hope and new beginnings.

It’s heartening to see our students engage with Australian history and culture through such creative and respectful activities. By honouring ANZAC Day, we not only pay tribute to the past but also reaffirm our commitment to peace and remembrance.
