Learning English isn’t always about textbooks and tests. Sometimes, it’s about flavour, conversation and a little bit of laughter.
Recently, our students enjoyed an afternoon of delicious wine and cheese tasting, featuring Australian selections including local favourites from the Perth region. The activity brought students together for a relaxed and enjoyable experience that combined food, culture and language learning in a memorable way.
The common area was set up with tasting tables, flavour charts and small plates of carefully selected cheeses. Students gathered around with curiosity, excited to try something new and practise English in a natural, social setting. For many students, it was also their first time trying some traditional Australian cheeses.
Discovering Australian Flavours
Students sampled a variety of cheeses, from creamy and mild to sharp and mature. Each cheese offered a different flavour experience, encouraging students to think carefully about taste and texture. As they tasted each one, they marked their flavour charts and described what they noticed:
-
Creamy
-
Nutty
-
Sharp
-
Smooth
-
Strong
-
Fruity
-
Dry
At first, some students found it challenging to describe flavours in English, but with a little guidance and discussion, they quickly gained confidence. They compared their notes, asked questions and experimented with new vocabulary. It was a delicious way to expand vocabulary while experiencing a small part of Australian food culture.

Taste, Talk, Connect
Each student received a flavour sheet to rate the cheeses and wines and write short descriptions in English. The activity encouraged students to think about how to express opinions and preferences clearly. Comparing opinions led to plenty of conversation:
“Too strong for me!”
“I like this one because it’s smooth.”
“This tastes better with the wine!”
These simple exchanges helped students practise everyday English in a meaningful context. Instead of focusing on grammar exercises, they were communicating naturally while sharing their thoughts and reactions.
Learning Through Experience
Activities like this show that language learning can happen in many different ways. Food is a universal topic that naturally brings people together, making it an ideal way to encourage conversation.
By exploring local food and drink, students also gain insight into Australian culture. Many were curious about where the cheeses were made, how they are traditionally eaten and which combinations work best with different wines.
Teachers guided the discussions, helping students learn useful expressions such as:
-
“In my opinion…”
-
“I prefer this one because…”
-
“This flavour reminds me of…”
-
“This is similar to a cheese from my country.”
Laughter, friendly debate about favourite cheeses and the shared experience of trying new flavours all helped create a positive learning environment. And yes, we might say (with a smile) that a little wine can sometimes help students feel more relaxed and confident speaking English.
By the end of the afternoon, students had not only discovered new tastes but also learned new vocabulary, practised conversation skills and connected with classmates from around the world. Activities like this remind us that learning a language is not just about studying rules, it’s also about communication, culture and community.
And sometimes, the best lessons happen around a table filled with good food, good company and plenty of conversation.
Cheers, mate! 🧀🍷
