Last Friday, to get the weekend started, our students participated in a beer tasting!
Byron Bay is renowned for its wide selection of fresh produce and excellent beers, wines, and spirits. So we thought what better way to give our students a slice of Byron Bay than a beer tasting?
We set up some tables inside to avoid the rain and hung out together together to taste some of the best beers Byron Bay and Australia have to offer!
The students received a sheet with all the beers and columns to note the flavors they could taste and smell. As well as this, there was a column in which they could rate the beer out of 10.
The beers the students tried were:
VB (Victoria Bitter)
XXXX Gold
Great Northern: Original Lager
Stone and Wood: Pacific ale
Stone and Wood: Green Coast Lager
Yullis: Amanda Mandarin IPA
Tooheys Old: Dark Ale
The VB, Great Northern Lager and Green Coast on average scored 5-7’s. The VB and Green Coast being labeled ‘bitter’ and ‘fruity’. Whilst Great Northern was found to be ‘Malty’ and ‘plain’.
The lowest scoring and least favorite beer of them all was XXXX Gold and Tooheys Old. It is a full strength lager with strong notes of barley and hops, Toohey’s has notes of chocolate, coffee and licorice. There were lots of funny faces when students took their first sips!
There was one very clear winner amongst the students, scoring 10’s across the board- Stone and Wood’s ‘Pacific Ale’ was the overall favorite. The students noted how they enjoyed the fruity and refreshing taste of the ale.
It was an excellent afternoon with great conversation and great beer!
