This week, Lexis English students had the opportunity to experience an authentic Australian tradition—the iconic sausage sizzle! Guided by Teacher Richard, the students headed to Roma Park for a memorable afternoon of BBQ, fresh air, and cultural immersion. This beloved Australian tradition, where grilled sausages are served on bread with a variety of sauces, was a new experience for many, and it became an instant favorite!

The activity took place in Roma Park, one of Brisbane’s most scenic spots, known for its lush gardens, peaceful lagoons, and picnic areas. The park also features BBQ grills open to the public, making it a popular location for friends and families to gather for a barbecue. Australians love their outdoor barbecues, and this experience allowed our students to truly understand the country’s BBQ culture.

Upon arrival, the students explored the park’s surroundings and enjoyed a walk through its beautiful gardens. Teacher Richard shared interesting facts about the park and how it became a staple location for outdoor gatherings in Brisbane. After the walk, it was time to fire up the grill!

Under Richard’s guidance, students learned how to use the public grills. They placed sausages on the hot surface, enjoying the sizzle and delicious aroma as they cooked. Soon enough, everyone had their sausage in hand, ready to customize it with sauces like ketchup, mustard, and barbecue sauce.

The atmosphere was filled with laughter, good food, and lively conversation. Students commented on how different this BBQ style was compared to what they have back home, and it sparked a friendly exchange of cultural insights. Many were surprised by the simplicity of the dish and yet how tasty it was—a true testament to the “less is more” approach of Australian BBQ.

After the meal, students spent some time relaxing in the park, snapping photos, and enjoying the sunny Brisbane weather. For many, it was a unique and memorable experience that showcased Australia’s love for the outdoors and the joy of sharing a meal with friends.
