FAQs – Studying at Lexis English on a Tourist Visa

Can I study at Lexis on a Tourist Visa?

Yes. The Australian Tourist Visa (officially called the ‘Visitor Visa’) allows you to study for up to 12 weeks. That makes it ideal for short-term learners, travellers taking a break from work, or anyone wanting to improve their English while exploring the country.

Many students choose to enrol for just a few weeks in one location, or combine study with travel by moving between campuses. You don’t need a Confirmation of Enrolment (COE), and the application process is simple. You can enrol before or after arriving in Australia, depending on your travel plans.

Can I work while studying on a Tourist Visa?

No. Tourist Visa holders are not allowed to work in Australia, and that includes part-time and casual jobs. If you want to work while you’re here, you need a visa that allows it, such as a Student visa or a Working Holiday visa. Please don’t be tempted by cash-in-hand work on a Tourist Visa. Getting the right visa before you start working is far less stress.

Tourist Visa students are generally here for lifestyle reasons, not work. Many are on extended holidays, career breaks, or travelling between jobs. If you’re able to support yourself, it’s a great way to study without long-term visa commitments.

What kind of English courses can I take?

Most Tourist Visa students enrol in General English programs. These courses focus on speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary, and practical communication. They’re designed for people who want to build confidence and fluency, not pass an exam.

You can study for as little as one week, or up to 12 weeks in total. Classes run in the mornings, with free time or optional activities in the afternoons. The pace is relaxed, but the teaching is high quality, and you’ll see real improvement even over a short stay.

Some campuses also offer English plus activity options, like English and surfing in Byron Bay or Noosa.

What’s the social life like at Lexis?

The social side of Lexis is one of the biggest reasons students choose to study here. Each campus runs a weekly calendar of free and low-cost activities. These are open to all students, and they’re a great way to meet people and explore your local area.

Activities vary by campus but typically include beach barbecues, yoga, guided hikes, local tours, sports competitions, conversation clubs, and weekend trips to nearby attractions. Tourist Visa students are some of the most active participants in the program, since they’re here to experience as much as possible in a short time.

You don’t need to be an outgoing person to take part. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, and you’ll quickly find your group.

Which campus is best for Tourist Visa students?

All Lexis campuses accept Tourist Visa enrolments, but some are especially popular with travellers focused on lifestyle and social experience.

Noosa offers a peaceful beach-town vibe with easy access to the national park and a strong activities program.

Byron Bay is great for music, surf, and alternative culture.

Sunshine Coast gives you both beach and city access in one spot.

Manly lets you enjoy the Sydney coastline without the chaos of the CBD.

Brisbane and Perth are better suited to students looking for a city base with lots of cafes, shops, and cultural events.

Many Tourist Visa students move between campuses during their trip using the Lexis Transfer Program.

How do I organise accommodation?

Lexis offers short-term accommodation options for Tourist Visa students. You can choose from homestay with a local family or shared student housing with other Lexis students. Most people use Lexis accommodation for their first few weeks while they settle in, then look for private rentals if staying longer.

Rent costs vary by location but generally range between 230 and 400 dollars per week, depending on the campus, the season, and whether meals are included. You don’t need to commit long-term, and the school team can help you find a setup that suits your travel plans.

Is this a good option for mature or solo travellers?

Yes. A lot of Tourist Visa students are in their late 20s, 30s, or older. Some are travelling solo, others are on sabbaticals, career breaks, or long-service leave. Lexis is not just for 18-year-olds on gap years. The mix of ages and nationalities makes the atmosphere open and inclusive.

Whether you’re looking to build your English, meet people, or just try something new while you travel, you’ll fit in. The structure of the course gives your trip purpose, while the social side adds real connection.

How do I enrol?

Enrolment is simple. Just choose your start date, campus, and number of weeks, then submit the form online or through an agent. You’ll receive a Letter of Acceptance, which is all you need for Tourist Visa purposes. There’s no COE and no need to apply for a Student Visa if you’re studying for less than 12 weeks.

You can start almost any Monday of the year. If you’re already in Australia on a Tourist Visa and decide you want to study, you can usually join the next available intake.
