Tasting and ranking some classic Aussie food!

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in the culture of a new country is to dive head first into the local cuisine. That’s no different here in Australia and at Lexis Noosa today, we hosted an Aussie food tasting experience in which everybody could try the best (and worst) of Australian food.

After classes on Wednesday, we gathered to try a whole host of Aussie food and ranked them from our favourite to our least favourite giving them a rating out of 5 stars.

We began with a sample of some classic Aussie drinks: Solo, ginger beer and lemon lime and bitters. Of these the ginger beer came out as clear winner averaging 5 stars, with lemon lime and bitters close behind with 3 stars and Solo registering a poor 2.5 stars overall. We also tried Milo which wasn’t a crowd pleaser at just 2 stars.

While sipping their drinks, we learnt some Aussie slang. Some of the words and phrases we learnt were “No wucka’s” meaning no worries, “Chuck a sickie” meaning to call in sick when you aren’t unwell (hopefully no one will be using that!), “She’ll be right!” meaning everything will be ok and we also learnt some food related slang too, such as ‘Bonza!’, ‘Ace!’ and ‘Ripper!’.

Then we moved on to some savoury snacks:

Shapes
We sampled 3 flavours of Shapes and these went down a treat, with our first Aussie food bringing home 4 stars out of 5

Party pies and sausage rolls

An underwhelming 1 star all round for each of these classic Aussie foods.

Vegemite

A real mixed bag for Vegemite, a food that no doubt splits opinion. We settled on a mediocre 2 stars for this beloved Australian favourite.

Then we satisfied our sweet tooth with some biscuits and desserts.

Anzac Biscuits

A very respectable 4 stars were dished out for Anzac biscuits which were up there with the favourites.

Fairy Bread

Fairy bread is a food that holds real nostalgia for Australians, but for our judges it didn’t quite hit the spot, settling in at 2 stars.

Tim Tams

Australia’s favourite biscuit came in with a shock result at just 3.5 stars, ranking below Anzac biscuits.

Lamingtons

Finally, we tried Lamington’s which scored the same as Tim Tams, at 3.5 stars.

This means that our students had ginger beer as their favourite drink and their favourite food was tied at 4 stars for Shapes and Anzac biscuits.
