Despite the horrendous downpours and flooding, three new students made their way to school for testing, orientation and then to join the others in class. These three have a common goal to improve their English, but they come from quite different backgrounds:
Laura is the first student from Lithuania that Lexis Byron has ever had! In Lithuania, she works for a crowdfunding company and is going to continue to work for this company, remotely, while in Byron. Her job is one reason Laura has come to Australia to study English – she wants to be able to speak English fluently, especially in a business context. Another reason is that she wanted to challenge herself to travel, work and study in a far-away country, all on her own. You’re off to a great start, Laura!
Tamara has come from Switzerland to do the English in Action – Surfing course, during her ‘gap’ year. Since she was a child, she has wanted to come to Australia. While here, she wants to be able to communicate fluently while studying, surfing and travelling so she’s kick starting her Australian adventure with 4 weeks at Lexis. Tamara is not quite sure what she wants to study at university – maybe medicine or psychology where she can help people – but she knows she needs a high level of English to succeed in whichever career she chooses.
Joaquin, from Spain, began his overseas English studies in Dublin last year but didn’t like being in a big city, or the weather. He and his family did a fair bit of research into alternatives and finally chose Byron Bay. (Hopefully, we can provide better weather for him soon!) In September, Joaquin is beginning a business degree at university and he needs a good level of English to succeed in both the degree and later in his career.
