This week, our students had the delightful opportunity to experience one of Brisbane’s most iconic activities – a ferry ride along the Brisbane River. This was not just any ordinary ride; it was a journey through the heart of the city, offering breathtaking views and an immersive experience of Brisbane’s rich history and vibrant culture. Accompanied by teacher Jordan, the students were in for an educational treat as well.
The ferry is a quintessential mode of transportation in Brisbane, weaving through the city along the serpentine path of the Brisbane River. It’s not just a means to get from one place to another; it’s a chance to see the city from a unique vantage point. As the ferry glided smoothly across the water, students were captivated by the picturesque landscapes unfolding before their eyes. The gentle breeze and the warm afternoon sun created the perfect setting for this mid-week excursion.
One of the highlights of the ride was undoubtedly the stunning view of the Story Bridge. This iconic structure is more than just a crossing point over the river; it’s a symbol of Brisbane’s architectural beauty and historical significance. The students were eager to capture this moment, and many of them took the opportunity to snap numerous photos with the bridge as their backdrop. The Story Bridge, with its majestic presence, provided a postcard-perfect setting that the students were excited to share with their families and friends back home.
Jordan took this opportunity to enrich the experience by sharing the fascinating history of the Story Bridge. As we approached the bridge, he began to recount its story, painting a vivid picture of its past. The Story Bridge, completed in 1940, was designed by John Bradfield, who also played a significant role in the design of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Named after John Douglas Story, a prominent public servant, the bridge is a testament to the resilience and growth of Brisbane. The construction of the Story Bridge was a monumental task, undertaken during the challenging years of the Great Depression. It provided much-needed employment for many Queenslanders and stands today as a symbol of hope and progress. The bridge is 777 meters long and 24 meters wide, making it one of the longest cantilever bridges in Australia. Its design and construction were feats of engineering that continue to impress visitors and locals alike.
As the ferry ride came to an end, the students were reluctant to disembark. The experience had been more than just a ride; it had been a journey of discovery, learning, and camaraderie. They returned to shore with a deeper appreciation for Brisbane’s heritage and a collection of photos that would forever remind them of this wonderful afternoon. The ferry ride was particularly special for those students who had recently arrived in Brisbane. It gave them a chance to see the city from a fresh perspective, helping them to feel more connected to their new home. The experience of sharing photos and stories with loved ones back home also helped bridge the distance, making the students feel closer to their families and friends despite being miles away.
The afternoon ferry ride with Jordan was a resounding success. It combined the beauty of Brisbane’s landscapes with the richness of its history, providing an unforgettable experience for our students. We look forward to more such excursions that not only educate but also inspire and connect our students to the world around them.
