Exploring Byron Bay with Lexis Students: Wildlife, Walks & a Night to Remember!
Two weeks ago, was packed with unforgettable adventures for our international students from Lexis Byron Bay. With English learning at the heart of everything we do, we took language practice outside the classroom and into nature, onto walking trails, and eventually… into Byron Bay’s buzzing nightlife! It was an incredible combination of fun, cultural immersion, and practical communication skills, all wrapped into three amazing activities: a trip to a Wildlife Sanctuary, a scenic walk through Arakwal National Park, and an epic Pub Crawl.
Wildlife Sanctuary – Up Close with Aussie Icons
We started the week with a visit to a Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, where our students got to meet some of Australia’s most iconic animals. From bouncing kangaroos to a sleepy koala curled up in a tree, and even a curious wombat strolling past — the sanctuary was full of surprises. We also spotted playful goats and a variety of native birds.
At the beginning of the excursion, students gathered for an educational talk led by Brett, who shared insightful information about the local environment and the impact of climate change on native wildlife. It was a thought-provoking session that added real-world relevance to what students have been learning in class. Brett’s talk sparked great conversations, and students had the chance to ask questions and discuss environmental issues in English, helping them expand their vocabulary while engaging with an important global topic.
Arakwal National Park Walk – Nature, Conversation & Sunshine ☀️
Midweek, we laced up our walking shoes and set out for a group hike through Arakwal National Park. The weather couldn’t have been better – sunny skies, a light ocean breeze, and the sound of birds overhead. The walk took about an hour and a half, weaving through coastal bushland with beautiful views and plenty of spots for a photo (or a few dozen!).
During the walk, English was the common language among our diverse group. These relaxed conversations in a real-world setting are one of the most valuable ways to build confidence and fluency. The beauty of the environment added an extra layer of inspiration — who wouldn’t want to talk about the ocean when it’s right in front of you?
The Pub Crawl – Cheers to New Friends & Great English!
Friday night? Time to celebrate! Our legendary Lexis Pub Crawl took students through some of Byron Bay’s favorite hangouts. We started at The Rails, where live music set the tone for the night. Next, we walked to The Northern Hotel, followed by the iconic Beach Hotel — always a hit with its beachfront vibes and energetic crowd.
After all the dancing and singing, we took a quick (and well-deserved) ice cream break at Frankie’s, then wrapped up the evening in style at Paradiso. The whole night was full of laughter, storytelling, dancing, and of course, plenty of English practice — ordering drinks, meeting new people, and sharing stories from the week.
More Than Just Learning
Activities like these show that learning English doesn’t have to be limited to a classroom. Whether we’re watching a wombat waddle, hiking under the sun, or dancing the night away, students are constantly engaging with the language in meaningful, memorable ways.
