Byron Bay – Peaceful Walk and Talk with Dominic – 2 September 2022

Last Friday’s student activity: Walk & Talk to the Byron Bay Water Tank and Arakwal National Park

Last Friday Dominic led a peaceful walk and talk with students to Byron Bay’s iconic graffitied water tank and the lookouts at Arakwal National Park (Arakwal). The Arakwal lookouts present stunning panoramic views of Tallow Beach to Broken Head Beach and inland.

Friday was an overcast and lightly raining day but that didn’t deter some valiant students from joining our walk and talk activity. On the walk, students practised their English conversational skills and talked about their experiences in Byron Bay, managing work/study/social life, travel plans, professional goals and even talked international politics.

It was fascinating for everyone to learn more about each other. The group of students included a former Professor, Agronomist, Nurse, English Literature university student and Social Worker. Everyone had diverse life experiences, travelled here from different cities, were different ages but all shared a hunger to learn, travel and study English in Australia.

On arrival at the water tank, the students were rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Byron’s beaches and natural surroundings. The historic Byron Bay lighthouse could even be seen in the distance. From May to November Humpback whales travel north past Cape Byron headland and can usually be seen from the lookout. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t great for whale watching this time.

If you are interested in independently visiting the water tank and Arakwal’s lookouts, they are only a light 15-minute walk from the Lexis Byron Bay campus.

Our students had a great time despite the weather.

Arakwal National Park is an important part of Aboriginal heritage, it’s a haven for migratory birds and animals and it’s a gift to travellers looking to escape the chaos of the thriving holiday town (NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service)
