Last Friday, to get the weekend started, our students participated in a beer tasting!
Byron Bay is renowned for its wide selection of fresh produce and excellent beers, wines, and spirits. So we thought what better way to give our students a slice of Byron Bay than a beer tasting?
We set up some tables outside in our garden in the shade and sat around together to taste some of the best beers Byron Bay and Australia have to offer!
Whilst also tasting some great beer, our students also had the opportunity to donate to an excellent cause. The Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital is working tirelessly at the moment to save our incredible Native and Non-Native animals from the bushfires that are currently affecting the area. We took this opportunity to raise some money and awareness for the wonderful work that they do.
The students received a sheet with all the beers and columns to note the flavors they could taste and smell. As well as this, there was a column in which they could rate the beer out of 10.
The beers the students tried were:
Byron Bay Brewery: Premium Lager
Toohey’s Old
Great Northern: Original Lager
Stone and Wood: Pacific ale
The Byron Brewery lager and the Great Northern Lager on average scored 6-8’s. The Byron Lager being labeled ‘light’ and ‘mild’. Whilst Great Northern was found to be ‘fruity’ and ‘plain’.
The lowest scoring and least favorite beer of them all was Toohey’s old. It is a dark style ale with notes of chocolate and coffee. There were lots of grimaces when students took their first sips!
There was one very clear winner amongst the students, scoring 10’s across the board- Stone and Wood’s ‘Pacific Ale’ was the overall favorite. The students noted how they enjoyed the fruity and refreshing taste of the ale.
It was an excellent afternoon with great conversation and great beer!
