Sunshine Coast – Gingerbread House Decorating
The Joy of Sharing: A Family Tradition
Even though it was hot outside, the campus was alive with laughter and creativity as the students worked on their gingerbread houses together. As the candy was passed around and the decorating tips were swapped, it became clear that gingerbread house-making wasn’t just about the final product. It was about being together, sharing stories, and enjoying the simple pleasures of the holiday season—Australian style.
We had a few mishaps along the way—some walls collapsed, and a few candy decorations had to be re-positioned—but no one cared. The beauty of the tradition lies in its messy, carefree nature. With gingerbread houses, there’s no need for perfection. It’s about celebrating the moment, and embracing the holiday spirit, no matter what the weather is like outside.
The Sweet Ending: Admiring the Creations
As the afternoon wore on, we stepped back and admired our gingerbread village. Despite the Australian summer heat, our houses looked like they belonged in a cozy, festive corner of a beachside town. There was something undeniably joyful about seeing the candy-covered roofs and colorful walls, with palm trees swaying in the distance (in our imaginations, at least).
We snapped photos of our creations, sharing the laughter and pride of what we had built together. Even though it wasn’t the snowy Christmas we often see in movies, it was a reminder that the spirit of the season can be found anywhere—even under the hot summer sun.
And while the gingerbread houses were beautiful, the best part was the time spent together. We’d made something from scratch, something with a personal touch—and it was a memory we would all treasure.
After a few photos and a few laughs, we then came to arguably the best bit of making gingerbread houses … we got to eat them! The sickly sweet of the icing mixed with the spice of the gingerbread made for a decadent afternoon treat. Although we were sad to see the destruction of the houses, the students left the afternoon full of joy (and gingerbread).
Happy building, and Merry Christmas from Down Under!
