Finding Balance: The Benefits of a Chair Yoga Class

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel like there’s never enough time for self-care, especially when it comes to physical activity. Between work, family commitments, and everyday stress, hitting the gym or attending a traditional yoga class can seem daunting. That’s where chair yoga comes in—a gentle, accessible alternative that brings the benefits of yoga to people of all ages and abilities.

Whether you’re looking to improve flexibility, reduce stress, or simply take a break from the hustle and bustle, a chair yoga class might be exactly what you need.

Today we were lucky enough to have Katia – one of our graduating students – run us through a session in the hopes of helping us find some balance in an otherwise busy world.

Finding Balance - Yoga With Katia

What is Chair Yoga?

Chair yoga is a modified form of traditional yoga that is performed while seated in a chair or using a chair for support during standing poses. It is designed to be gentle on the body, making it an ideal option for individuals with limited mobility, seniors, or anyone who finds it difficult to get on the floor or hold challenging yoga poses for extended periods.

In a chair yoga class, participants use the chair as a tool to help improve flexibility, strength, balance, and mindfulness, all while minimizing strain on the body. The class usually involves a combination of breathwork, stretching, and simple yoga poses adapted to the seated position, with the option to stand or use the chair for balance in certain postures.

What to Expect in a Chair Yoga Class

If you’ve never tried chair yoga before, here’s a glimpse of what Katia took us through today

  • Gentle Warm-up: The class usually begins with a warm-up that includes light stretching and breathwork to help you ease into the session.
  • Seated Poses: You’ll move through various seated postures, such as forward bends, side stretches, and seated twists, which help to open up the body and increase flexibility.
  • Standing Poses (with Chair Support): Some classes include standing poses, such as tree pose or warrior pose, using the chair for balance and support. These help improve strength and balance.
  • Cool-down and Meditation: The class will likely end with a cool-down that includes more gentle stretching and a short meditation or relaxation session, allowing you to integrate the benefits of the practice and leave feeling calm and centered.

It’s also a wonderful option for people who want to practice yoga at work, in the comfort of their home, or in a group setting at a community center.
