To the Movies, Painting Tote Bags & Making Mini Pavlovas
The Lexis English Campus on the Sunshine Coast boasts year-round blue skies, ocean views and the sunshine that is promised in the name. Our activities are designed to be examples of real-life situations for students to use their English in a safe, relaxed and supportive environment. These activities create opportunities to make friends with students from around the globe while also enjoying new experiences!
To recap our previous week- students took a stroll to the cinema to see the hottest sequel from Meryl Streep. We had students relaxing for an afternoon of painting turtles and sunsets onto tote bags. Finally rounding out the week with making mini-Pavlovas! A famous Aussie desert that is famous for fresh fruit and delectable cream.
To the Movies!
Do you like going to the cinema? Are you in a new country and everything is a little different and new? Do you want to see the new movies and practice your English understanding? Most importantly- do you want to know how to get discounts??
All these questions were answered with our afternoon of To The Movies! Living in a new country does not mean you miss out on the newest films. Especially when the hottest movie out is from Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada 2!
So, as we took a swift 5-minute walk over to the cinema, we were able to sign up our students for cinema membership cards (free!). Once there we went through how to use the kiosk to buy tickets, how to use your Lexis student card for discounted student tickets and how to use the cinema membership for discounted drinks and popcorn.

Painting Tote Bags
As Thursday rolled around, we aimed for what some would say were ‘good vibes.’
We pulled out the paint, the brushes, and (not gonna lie) our phones. Had to look online for some inspiration/ painting tips. There are some great artists among our students, but it never hurts to source some ideas to further the creative process. Some popular choices were sunsets, butterflies, turtles, and turtles.
Making/Decorating Mini Pavlovas
What is a Pavlova? Great question.
Pavlovas are a famous Australian (maybe New Zealand- but probably Aussie) meringue-based dessert. Created to honor and named after Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova in the 1920s. With an airy meringue as the base of this delicious dessert- you simply add cream and your choice of fresh fruit. We went with fresh blueberries, sweet strawberries, ripe bananas and green grapes. Would also strongly suggest adding passionfruit syrup for that extra kick of yummy.
Our nimble (thoroughly washed hands) students dolloped cream and chose their preferred fruit. The real skill comes in to figuring out how many pieces of fruit you can fit on top. We always suggest as many as you can!
