Sunshine Coast – Surf Awareness Program – 28 February

Today our students attended a Surf Awareness Program hosted by the Maroochydore SLSC!

This morning, our students attended a Surf Awareness Program hosted by the Maroochydore SLSC! The students were absolutely thrilled to be given the opportunity to learn more about Australian beaches & beach safety, including learning about safe swimming in the surf, the meaning of the flags, CPR & all about reading the tides, rips & what to do if you get caught in a rip!

First, our students enjoyed an introduction to the Surf Awareness day & got to meet the lifeguards – they learnt about the meanings of the flags, swimming safely & rip tides.

The students enjoyed the hands on CPR demonstration, where they got to practice CPR on dummies! Lots of the students are keen to do their CPR course to be CPR certified!

We split into 4 groups so the students could all practice reading the tides, entering the water safely & swimming.

Marina Ferracin Giarin from Brazil (left) and Marina Tabachuk from Germany (right) bravely spoke to the media to express their gratitude for the opportunity to learn more about Australian surf skills, they did so well! They were a little nervous to speak to channel 7 news, but were so happy with themselves afterwards.

After a sausage sizzle, we played many games of tug-of-war!

We had a great day at the Surf Awareness Program! We are very grateful to have been able to attend such an amazing program to help our International students learn more about Australian beach safety. Thank you to the Sunshine Coast Council, Maroochydore SLSC & Marilyn Keelty for organising the day, the students learnt so much & can now go out into the surf with more confidence!
