10 Tips to Make the Most of Your Study in Noosa
Studying in Noosa isn’t just about learning English, it’s about beach walks before class, weekend hikes in the National Park, and finding your place in a real Aussie town with a lot of charm and just enough chaos to keep things interesting.
Here’s how to make the most of your time at Lexis Noosa, whether you’re here for a short course or settling in for a few months.
1. Walk through the National Park at least once a week
Noosa’s coastal track is one of the most beautiful walks in Australia, and it starts just a short stroll from campus. If you only ever see the beach in front of your homestay, you’re missing half the picture. Pack water, wear sneakers and go exploring. The National Park is filled with ‘secret’ beaches that you might not find on your own, so ask a local for advice and you might just find yourself with a private beach for the day. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for whales breaching – the national park is one of the best ‘whale spotting’ locations in Australia
2. If you’re looking for work, do the Barista or Bar Course early
Cafés and restaurants in Noosa always need staff, but they expect you to know the basics. The Lexis Barista and Bar & Cocktail courses are short, hands-on and very practical. Students who do these early usually find jobs faster, and get better shifts. It’s not difficult to find work in Noosa, but the best jobs need a little bit of training (and the RSA certificate!).
3. Use your housemates or homestay family as your first local network
If you’re living in Lexis student housing or a shared apartment, start there. Housemates often pass on job leads, sell second-hand surfboards, or introduce you to the café manager who hired them. Don’t wait to meet people. Just knock on the door and say hi.
4. Avoid Hastings Street prices unless you know the tricks
Yes, Hastings Street is beautiful, but you don’t need to spend $25 on breakfast every day. Ask returning students where to get cheap eats, happy hour drinks and supermarket discounts. The locals know, and you should too. Best place is to start is right around the school – Noosa Junction is ‘where the locals shop’, and is the best place for cheap eats and happy hour specials!
5. Apply for jobs in person
You can scroll job websites for hours, but in Noosa, most casual jobs are still handed out face-to-face. Walk into cafés with a printed CV, smile, and introduce yourself. They remember friendly students who look like they’re ready to work. Most students find work quite easily in Noosa.
6. Go to the beach early or late
Main Beach can packed during the day. But at 6am, it’s calm, quiet and stunning. Swim before class, grab a takeaway coffee and enjoy the town before the crowds roll in. Same goes for sunset … it’s your golden hour, literally. You’ll meet the same people at the beach each morning … it really is a special way to start your day.
7. Join the Lexis activities even if you feel shy
You didn’t come all this way to sit in your room. Lexis runs barbecues, paddleboarding, yoga, weekend hikes and more, and they’re all designed to help you connect. Most people feel awkward at first, but everyone is in the same situation and they make friends quickly. Then it all gets easier.
8. Learn names. Use them.
Noosa is small. If you’re polite, people remember you. Learn your barista’s name. Greet your bus driver. Say thanks to the local baker. Students who make those little connections always say their experience felt more “real”.
9. Don’t panic if your English doesn’t improve overnight
Some days you’ll feel like a genius. Some days you’ll feel lost. That’s normal. The trick is consistency. Speak a little every day. Don’t switch back to your language with your friends too quickly. The more you use it, the faster it sticks.
10. Let Noosa slow you down
This isn’t a big city. There are no trains to catch, no giant shopping malls to run around. And that’s a good thing. Take your time. Swim more. Talk more. Pay attention. You’ll probably leave speaking better English, sure — but also feeling better in general.
