It’s peak summer here in Noosa and with the temperature soaring to a sweltering 36 degrees on Thursday, there was hardly a better way to cool off than sipping on some ice-cold Australian beers.
We gathered after classes and each student was given a scorecard on which they could jot down their thoughts on each beer they sampled. We looked at a quick profile of each beer and had to think about what we thought of each beer’s appearance, aroma and taste.
First up was Victoria Bitter. A lager from down south, it’s purpose is to quench your thirst in the harsh Australian climate. It’s bitter taste compared to other lagers can often put people off but there’s a reason VB is one of Australia’s most popular beers.
Next we tried Great Northern, which is Australia’s best selling beer. A crisp, golden lager, it’s the perfect choice on a roasting hot day.
We then moved on to two local options. The Sunshine Coast is renowned for its micro-breweries that have popped up everywhere in recent years and the craft beer market is thriving here.
We tried the Japanese Lager from Heads of Noosa Brewing Co. which is brewed in Noosaville just a few minutes from the school. A crisp Japanese rice lager which goes perfectly with a sunny afternoon spent with friends.
Finally, we tried another local brewery, with Land & Sea’s First Point Pale Ale, named after First Point in the National Park. An American style Pale Ale, it’s a lot darker in colour than your normal Pale Ales as it pours a delicious chocolate colour and it’s a lot more bitter than most Pale Ales.
Overall, the Aussie beer-tasting afternoon was a delightful way to explore different flavours and styles. Whether you prefer the classic big brand beers or something more crafty and unique, there’s something for everyone in the world of Australian brews. Cheers to good times and great beers!
