Lexis Students – Skull Colouring & Nachos to celebrate the Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos in Mexico – 01.11.2024

This week at Lexis, students had the chance to learn about a unique and colorful tradition from Mexico—the Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos. The activity, called “Skull Colouring & Nachos,” was led by one of our Upper-Intermediate students from Mexico, Anaid Rabanales Damian, who shared insights about the importance of this holiday in Mexican culture. She also highlighted a Mexican festival happening in Brisbane over the weekend, organized by the local Mexican community.

During the activity, students colored vibrant skull designs, known as calaveras, which symbolize the beauty and joy of life in Mexican Day of the Dead traditions. These skulls are often elaborately decorated with bright colors and patterns and are sometimes worn as face paint during celebrations. The painted skulls, along with flowers, candles, and offerings, are used to honor and remember loved ones who have passed away, transforming the day into a festive remembrance rather than a somber occasion.

While coloring their skulls, students enjoyed a classic Mexican snack of nachos with guacamole, adding an authentic touch to the experience. The activity was a great blend of creativity, cultural learning, and delicious food, giving students a window into one of Mexico’s most cherished traditions. It was a lively way to celebrate the Day of the Dead, combining art, culture, and community!
