International Dish Competition at Lexis English Brisbane!

On 
a deliciously exciting afternoon on March 28, the student lounge at Lexis English Brisbane was transformed into a global kitchen, bustling with aromas, colours, and happy conversations. We hosted our very first International Dish Competition, and it was a feast in every sense of the word!
Three talented student chefs stepped up to the challenge, each representing their country with passion and pride: Peru, Chile, and Japan. With over 30 spectators cheering them on, three expert judges ready with their taste buds, and plates full of love, it was an event to remember. It wasn’t just about food—it was about storytelling, creativity, and connection.
The room was buzzing as our contestants shared the cultural significance of their dishes, the inspiration behind them, and the effort it took to bring the flavours of home to the heart of Brisbane. From sweet to savoury, crispy to creamy, every bite carried a part of someone’s heritage.
Meet the Contestants and Their Incredible Dishes
Each participant poured their heart into creating something special—and the results were nothing short of amazing:
Peru – Causa de Langostino
Our winning dish! A beautiful layered tower of creamy potato, fresh prawns, and avocado, this Peruvian classic was as stunning to look at as it was to taste. A refreshing dish with a warm, homey feeling—it was the kind of comfort food that instantly transports you to a sunny afternoon in South America. No wonder the judges were blown away!
Chile – Chilenitos, Empanadas, and Sopaipillas
Not one, but three dishes were presented from Chile! A delightful trio that showcased the diversity of Chilean cuisine: Chilenitos (sweet biscuits with caramel), empanadas (savory pastries filled with meat or cheese), and sopaipillas (fried pumpkin bread). This combo brought both sweet and savory to the table and had everyone going back for seconds.
Japan – Okonomiyaki
Japan’s entry was the iconic Okonomiyaki, a savory pancake loaded with cabbage, meat, and special sauce. Hot off the pan and made with care, this dish brought an explosion of umami flavour. Watching the preparation was just as satisfying as eating it—truly a treat for all the senses!
The Prize, the Judges, and the Tough Decision
Our judges—three staff members with adventurous taste buds—had the incredibly tough job of picking a winner. As theysampled each dish, they asked questions about ingredients, preparation methods, and the meaning behind the recipes. In their words, “It was the hardest decision we’ve had to make all year.”
Each chef delivered not just delicious food, but a passionate presentation that made everyone feel connected to their story. But in the end, Peru’s “Causa de Langostino” took home the crown. As a reward, our generous partner Dundee Travel gifted the winner an incredible prize: a full-day trip to Moreton Island, valued at $185 AUD! A well-deserved adventure awaits!
