Our Tuesday afternoon activity was Upbeat Singlish with Marie.
Songs are a great source of ‘real-life’ language and we can use music to practise English language skills. Most of all, songs are a fun way to learn English!
Its important to choose the right song for Singlish
The best learning happens when we have fun. So it’s really important to choose music that you like. The best songs for learning English are:
- not too fast (easy to sing along)
- in everyday English (not too many new or difficult words)
- clear (you can easily hear all the words).
Singing helps the students to learn how words are linked together in connected speech and learning the rhythm of a language
It can be challenging to sing along a song when the students don’t know the song, so its best to pick out popular songs from around the world to start with.
- Find the song lyrics online, or find a music video with subtitles.
- Read the song lyrics out loud. Look up any unknown words in a dictionary.
- Listen to the song and read the lyrics at the same time.
Some students are shy or lack confidence. Singing with other people can help. It creates a safe space for them to practise expressing themselves aloud. They simply need to be enthusiastic!
Marie used songs like “Bittersweet Symphony” Cat Empires: “Still Young”
Audrey the student had to listen to the song and fill in the gap of the lyrics. Marie also explained a few words Audrey didn’t know. In the end they were both singing along.
