On Friday, our Upper-Intermediate class put on a fabulous fashion show for the entire school, which was followed by our monthly Sausage Sizzle.
Teacher Adrienne devised the fashion show to get students to practise the passive voice.
The passive voice is used when the person or thing that does the action is not important, not known or obvious for example.
Glass is made from sand (we don’t know or care who made the glass)
My car was broken into last night (my car is the focus of my attention. I also don’t know who broke in)
She was run over yesterday (it’s obvious that a car did the running over)
Fashion provides lots of opportunity to use the passive voice because the garment is more important than anything else. Examples I spotted from the show were:
These items were made by disabled women in Africa
The profits from the sale of these items will be donated to charity
The hat is made from silk and rabbit fur
The dress was designed to wear to work
The magnificent MMM English has a video on the passive voice:
Teacher Paul joined in and modelled a black dress while cooking the sausages on the barbie.
The fashion parade and sausage sizzle were a great combination and a spectacular way to wrap up the school week.
