Boomerang Art & Beach Volleyball Fun!
Boomerang painting – Wednesday, May 14th
We at Lexis English Byron Bay would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land we live and study on today, the Arakwal People of the Bundjalung Nation. We pay our respects to Elders past and present and recognize their deep, ongoing connection to the land, water, skies, and spirit.
The Arakwal People are a group of Indigenous Australians who are part of the Bundjalung Nation, a larger Aboriginal group that traditionally occupies land in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland. The Bundjalung Nation consists of multiple clans and language groups, and the Arakwal People are the Traditional Custodians of the Byron Bay area. They have lived on and cared for this land for thousands of years, maintaining a deep spiritual and cultural connection to the region. Today, the Arakwal People continue to play an important role in preserving their heritage, protecting the environment, and sharing their knowledge with the broader community.
As part of this cultural experience, students explored the significance of Indigenous Australian art, particularly dot painting, which is one of the most recognizable and meaningful forms of Aboriginal art. Traditional Indigenous artwork often tells stories, with each pattern, symbol, and color representing elements of the natural world, ancestral journeys, and sacred knowledge passed down through generations. Dot painting, which originated from the Central and Western Desert regions of Australia, was historically used to depict Dreamtime stories and sacred messages. The use of dots was also a way to disguise sacred meanings from those outside the community, ensuring that only those with cultural knowledge could fully interpret the designs.
During the session, students learned about the traditional symbols used in Aboriginal art, such as concentric circles representing waterholes or meeting places, wavy lines symbolizing rivers or journeys, and U-shapes depicting people sitting around a fire.
It was an informative, engaging, and relaxing afternoon activity! Not only did students enjoy the hands-on experience of painting, but they also gained a deeper appreciation of Aboriginal culture and the importance of storytelling through art. We love providing opportunities for our students to connect with the rich cultural heritage of Australia, and we look forward to more creative and educational activities in the future!

Beach Volleyball – Friday 16th May
Last week, our Lexis Byron Bay students headed down to the Main Beach for an exciting afternoon of beach volleyball!
There were 19 of us in total, and we split into four teams, rotating through games and cheering each other on. We played for almost two hours, and the energy never dropped—just lots of laughter and a little friendly competition.
Not studying with us yet, but would like to?
