Last Friday, our students came together to learn Australian Slang and taste some classic Aussie food!
The students tried Vegemite, Fairy Bread, Lamingtons, Tim Tams, Cherry Ripe chocolate bars, sausage rolls, meat pies, Kirks soft drinks and minties!
- Vegemite – A salty, savory spread made from yeast extract, typically enjoyed on toast with butter. It has a strong, umami flavor.
- Fairy Bread – A simple treat made with white bread, butter, and colorful sprinkles (hundreds and thousands). Popular at kids’ parties in Australia.
- Lamingtons – Square sponge cakes coated in chocolate and rolled in desiccated coconut. Sometimes they have a layer of jam or cream inside.
- Tim Tams – Chocolate-coated biscuits with a creamy filling. They are famous for the “Tim Tam Slam,” where people bite off the ends and drink through them like a straw.
- Cherry Ripe – A chocolate bar filled with a mix of cherries and coconut, covered in dark chocolate. One of Australia’s oldest chocolate bars.
- Sausage Rolls – Puff pastry filled with seasoned minced meat (usually beef or pork), baked until golden and crispy. A popular snack or lunch item.
- Meat Pies – A classic Aussie dish, these are small pies filled with minced meat, gravy, and sometimes onions or cheese. Often enjoyed with tomato sauce.
- Kirks Soft Drinks – A brand of Australian soft drinks with unique flavors like Lemonade, Pasito (passionfruit), and Creaming Soda.
- Minties – Hard, chewy mint-flavored lollies (candies) that freshen the breath and are known for being quite sticky!
This was a very popular activity, around 30 students joined, and they all had a blast!
Only some students tried the classic Australian snack: toast with butter and vegemite!
Later, our students watched some videos about Australian slang and, then learnt some key Aussie slang phrases with Paul – one of our amazing teachers at Lexis Byron Bay!
Some of the words and phrases our students learnt included:
- ‘Good on ya mate’ = Good job!
- Tinnie = Beer
- Arvo = Afternoon
- Servo = Service station
- Sheila = Woman
- Bloke = Man
- Avo = Avocado
- Ta = Thank you
- G’day Mate = Hello
- Macca’s = McDonald’s
Our students absolutely love this activity, it is always a hit! We can’t wait for our next Aussie food and Slang activity.
