Last Tuesday, our students came together to learn Australian Slang and taste some classic Aussie food!
The students tried Vegemite, Fairy Bread, Lamingtons, Tim Tams, Twisties, sausage rolls, meat pies, Kirks soft drinks, non-alcoholic Ginger Beer and shapes!
- Vegemite – A salty, savory spread made from yeast extract, typically enjoyed on toast with butter. It has a strong, umami flavor.
- Fairy Bread – A simple treat made with white bread, butter, and colorful sprinkles (hundreds and thousands). Popular at kids’ parties in Australia.
- Lamingtons – Square sponge cakes coated in chocolate and rolled in desiccated coconut. Sometimes they have a layer of jam or cream inside.
- Tim Tams – Chocolate-coated biscuits with a creamy filling. They are famous for the “Tim Tam Slam,” where people bite off the ends and drink through them like a straw.
- Sausage Rolls – Puff pastry filled with seasoned minced meat (usually beef or pork), baked until golden and crispy. A popular snack or lunch item.
- Meat Pies – A classic Aussie dish, these are small pies filled with minced meat, gravy, and sometimes onions or cheese. Often enjoyed with tomato sauce.
- Kirks Soft Drinks – A brand of Australian soft drinks with unique flavors like Lemonade, Pasito (passionfruit), and Creaming Soda.
- Shapes: A popular Australian snack crackers made by Arnott’s, available in flavors like Pizza, Cheddar, BBQ, and Chicken Crimpy. They’re crunchy and often enjoyed on their own or with dips.
- Bundaberg Ginger Beer: is a popular Australian drink made with real ginger and brewed for a bold, spicy flavor.
After learning some Aussie slang, we played Kahoot and the winner could get a big package of tim tams!
Kyoka was the winner and was happy to take some tim-tams home.
Our students absolutely love this activity, it is always a hit! We can’t wait for our next Aussie food and Slang activity.
