Exploring Roma Street Parklands
Nature in the City
A Green Escape in the Heart of Brisbane
On a sunny afternoon on 19 March, a group of nature-loving students from Lexis English Brisbane laced up their walking shoes and set out to explore one of the city’s most stunning green spaces—Roma Street Parklands. Just a short walk from the hustle and bustle of Brisbane’s CBD, the parklands are a hidden gem that feels like stepping into another world.
The moment we entered, we were greeted by lush greenery, colorful flowers in full bloom, and the peaceful sounds of nature. It was the perfect setting for students to unwind, take a deep breath of fresh air, and enjoy a day discovering the wild beauty tucked right in the middle of the city.
For many of our international students, it was their first time visiting this iconic park—and it didn’t disappoint.
Nature, Wildlife, and a “Bin Chicken” Encounter
As we walked along the winding paths, we spotted local wildlife everywhere. From sunbathing lizards scurrying across the warm rocks to birds singing cheerfully from the treetops, the park was alive with movement and sound. Cameras were out, phones were snapping photos, and everyone was in awe of the natural beauty around us.
One of the most interesting encounters of the day was with Australia’s famous (and sometimes infamous) bird—the Ibis. Known affectionately (and humorously) by Aussies as the “Bin Chicken”, the Ibis sparked plenty of questions and laughter from our group. We learned about its scavenger habits, its role in Australian urban folklore, and even practiced saying “Bin Chicken” with our best Aussie accents!
Beyond the birds and lizards, students were enchanted by the vibrant floral displays scattered throughout the park. From tropical plants to native Australian blooms, the gardens were bursting with colour, and the variety was incredible. It was like walking through a living, breathing postcard.
Conversations, Laughter, and Learning
As always, it wasn’t just about sightseeing—it was about connecting. The tour gave everyone a chance to chat, share stories, practice English in a natural setting, and enjoy each other’s company. Whether we were admiring a flower, pointing out a bird, or joking about who was brave enough to approach the Ibis, the mood was light, relaxed, and full of joy.
The beauty of these outdoor adventures is how they turn into language learning moments without even trying. Students asked questions, described what they saw, and practiced their listening and speaking skills in real time. And best of all, they were doing it while having fun and bonding with classmates from all over the world.
We ended the tour with big smiles, new friendships, and a deeper appreciation for Brisbane’s beautiful green spaces. Several students said they couldn’t wait to come back again—next time with a picnic!
