Folding Friendships: A Peaceful Afternoon of ️

Origami

At Lexis English Brisbane, learning English goes hand in hand with exploring global cultures, trying new things, and building friendships that go far beyond the classroom. On Wednesday, 24 April, our students had the chance to dive into the intricate and beautiful world of origami, led by our lovely Japanese staff member Sachi. It was a calming and creative afternoon where paper transformed into art—and where people from all over the world connected through the gentle folds of tradition, imagination, and shared joy.

A Cultural Exchange Through Paper and Peace

Origami, the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, is more than just a fun craft—it’s a powerful symbol of mindfulness, creativity, and peace. With Sachi as our guide, we learned not only how to fold paper, but also the meaning behind some of the most iconic designs. The highlight of the session was learning to make the origami crane, a symbol of peace and hope in Japanese culture. As Sachi explained the crane’s story, our students listened with curiosity and respect. For many, it was their first time doing origami. For others—especially our Japanese students—it was a beautiful reminder of home. Some of them even stepped in to assist their classmates, sharing tips, demonstrating folds, and suggesting new designs to try.

Frogs, Stars, and Ninja Surprises

Once everyone got the hang of it, the room buzzed with excitement and creativity. What started as a quiet workshop quickly turned into a joyful, collaborative experience. Students folded frogs that could hophearts full of colourninja starsgift boxes, and other charming creations. Tables were covered with colourful paper, laughter echoed around the room, and everyone found themselves focused and relaxed in a way that only a hands-on activity like origami can offer. Some students proudly showed off their masterpieces, while others chose to leave their origami around our student lounge, turning the school into a mini gallery of peace, friendship, and imagination. Each paper creation now holds a story—of patience, of helping others, and of a shared moment of fun.

Language, Culture, and Community

What made this event truly special was the cultural blend it represented. As an international English school, Lexis English Brisbane brings together students from all corners of the globe. Activities like this not only help improve English skills through conversation and instructions, but they also offer a chance to experience and appreciate different cultures firsthand. In one afternoon, students practised listening, speaking, and following directions in English—all while engaging in something meaningful and enjoyable. And more than that, they made new friends, laughed at their folding mistakes, and cheered each other on with every successful crane or jumping frog.
