A Sweet Escape from the Classroom
On Thursday afternoon, May 8th, the Lexis English Brisbane campus transformed into a buzzing hub of laughter, friendly competition, and sugary delight. What better way to unwind after a week of learning than with a big scoop of ice creamand some good old-fashioned board games? This event proved once again that fun, food, and friendship are the perfect recipe for building community and boosting language skills.
From the moment students arrived, they were greeted by the sweet smell of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry wafting through the air. Tables were set with an irresistible selection of flavours and toppings—sprinkles, syrups, crushed cookies, and more. It didn’t take long before everyone was mixing their perfect ice cream creation, chatting excitedly in English as they built their dream dessert bowls.
Let the Games Begin!
With spoons in hand and ice cream in bellies, the real fun kicked off—board game battles! Students teamed up or went head-to-head in a range of classic games like Uno, Jenga, Connect Four, and Scrabble. Whether it was the thrill of stacking a wobbly tower in Jenga or challenging vocabulary in Scrabble, every moment was filled with cheers, jokes, and light-hearted competition.
It was heartwarming to see how quickly students from different countries connected over the games. Someone from Brazil teamed up with a student from Japan, while classmates from Spain and Korea strategized against each other in Uno. In every corner of the student lounge, conversations flowed naturally, often switching from game rules to weekend plans and travel tips around Australia—all in English, of course!
A Chill Afternoon with Warm Connections
What made this event truly special wasn’t just the sweet treats or exciting games, but the genuine connections being made. Students who had only just arrived in Brisbane were suddenly laughing with classmates, asking for rematches, and sharing stories over second (and third!) scoops of ice cream.
Our Lexis staff joined in too, supporting students in English conversation, explaining game rules, and making sure everyone felt welcome. The event had that warm, cozy energy of a group of friends hanging out on a lazy summer day—even though many had only met each other that week.
