Aussie Food tasting: The True Taste of Down Under
Lexis English Students Take on Aussie Snacks!
A Feast of Flavours and Friendships
On a lively afternoon in March 21, the student lounge at Lexis English Brisbane turned into a tasting haven filled with laughter, curiosity, and the irresistible aroma of classic Australian treats. That’s right—it was time once again for one of our most loved and requested activities: the Aussie Food Tasting!
This event is so popular, we could host it every fortnight and it would still be a crowd favourite. And this time was no exception. The room filled quickly with new students eager for their first bite of Aussie culture, and returning students who already knew that the combo of snacks, storytelling, and smiles would make for a perfect afternoon.
With long tables covered in iconic snacks and drinks from across Australia, students were invited to explore the weird, wonderful, and often surprising world of Aussie cuisine—one bite at a time.
What’s on the Menu, Mate?
The tasting began with curious eyes and cautious fingers, but by the end, students were going back for seconds (or thirds!). Here’s what we sampled on our culinary adventure through Aussie snackland:
- Tim Tams – A clear crowd favourite. These legendary chocolate biscuits disappeared quickly as students learned
about the famous “Tim Tam Slam.” - Twisties – Crunchy, cheesy, and just the right amount of weird. Some students couldn’t stop eating them, while others looked adorably confused.
- Licorice Lollies – Let’s just say this one divided the crowd… but it made for great conversation and hilarious reactions!
- Party Pies & Sausage Rolls – Classic Aussie comfort food. Warm, flaky, and savoury, they were gobbled up in no time.
- Caramello Koalas – Cute, chocolatey, and filled with caramel—what’s not to love?
- Shapes – These savoury crackers came in a variety of flavours, sparking debates about which colour box was the best.
- Fairy Bread – Yes, it’s just bread with butter and sprinkles, but somehow it became a magical experience. A true Aussie party staple.
- Kirks Soft Drinks – From creamy soda to lemon squash, students sipped their way through Aussie-style refreshment.
- And of course, the infamous Vegemite Toast – Possibly the most iconic Australian food experience of all. Some students were instantly fans, while others… well, let’s just say it’s an acquired taste! Watching their faces go from curiosity to what is this?! was pure gold.
More Than Just a Snack Break
As always at Lexis, this activity wasn’t just about food—it was about bringing people together. Around every snack table, conversations flowed. Students practiced their English while asking about Aussie food culture, sharing their own country’s popular treats, and even teaching each other how to properly pronounce “Vegemite.”
There was laughter, plenty of food selfies, and lots of bonding over bold flavours and unexpected discoveries. Some students even challenged each other to “double dip” on Vegemite toast or guess which snack would be sweet or savoury without checking the label.
By the end of the event, we had full bellies and even fuller hearts. The best part? Seeing students who just met earlier that day laughing like old friends.
