Aussie Food Tasting
Tastes Like Australia! Lexis English Brisbane Goes Down Under!
What’s on the Menu, Mate? A Culinary Tour of Aussie Classics
On May 9th, our students at Lexis English Brisbane took a bold step into the world of Australian flavours with our highly anticipated Aussie Food Tasting event! It was a fun, flavour-filled afternoon where curiosity met culture and taste buds had a wild ride. With plates stacked high and students gathered around the table, the room buzzed with excitement as everyone sampled their way through some of Australia’s most iconic snacks and treats.
We kicked off the event with a quick intro to Aussie cuisine, and then… it was time to eat! Some students approached the table with wide eyes and adventurous spirits, while others cautiously picked up snacks as if they might bite back. But by the end of the session, everyone had their favourites—and some were even sneaking in third helpings!
Here’s what was on the menu for our cultural and culinary tour through the land Down Under:
- Tim Tams – These chocolate-coated biscuits were the crowd favourite. Smooth, creamy, and impossible to eat just one, the Tim Tam Slam (biting off both ends and sipping tea or coffee through the biscuit) became an instant hit. Watching students try it for the first time was priceless!
- Twisties – Australia’s answer to cheesy snacks. Their quirky flavour and bright colour caused mixed reactions—from giggles to genuine addiction. A few students couldn’t get enough, while others paused after the first bite, unsure of what they’d just experienced!
- Party Pies & Sausage Rolls – The true comfort food of Aussie gatherings. These warm, flaky pastries filled with savoury meat goodness were an absolute hit. Within minutes, trays were wiped clean, and students were asking for more.
- Shapes – These savoury crackers came in different flavours like BBQ, Pizza, and Cheese & Bacon. A debate quickly broke out over which flavour was the best, but everyone agreed: they’re dangerously snackable.
- Fairy Bread – It might sound like something from a children’s book, but this buttered white bread sprinkled with hundreds and thousands (colourful sugar sprinkles) was a surprise sensation. Simple, nostalgic, and strangely delicious—it was a hit with sweet tooths!
- Lamingtons – A square of sponge cake coated in chocolate and rolled in coconut, sometimes with a layer of jam in the middle. This humble dessert turned out to be a favourite for many who had never tasted anything like it before. It’s soft, sweet, and a true Aussie classic.
- Vegemite Toast – Ah, the infamous Vegemite. Possibly the most talked-about item of the day. We spread it thin (the Aussie way!), but nothing could prepare students for that salty, yeasty kick. Reactions ranged from confused to horrified to “hmm… I actually like it!” Watching their expressions change from curiosity to comedy gold was one of the highlights of the afternoon!
Beyond the Bites: A Cultural Feast
This wasn’t just about filling stomachs—it was about connecting with Australian culture through taste. Students got to learn about the background of each item, why Aussies love them, and even when they’re typically eaten. Discussions flowed naturally in English as students described their reactions, compared foods to snacks from back home, and laughed over shared surprises (we’re looking at you, Vegemite).
The activity sparked spontaneous conversations about different food traditions, favourite childhood meals, and even holiday customs. It was a delicious way to learn new vocabulary, practise speaking skills, and connect with classmates from around the world.
Smiles, Selfies, and Second Servings
Of course, no Lexis event is complete without laughter, selfies, and new friendships. As students sat together, munching on pies and trying fairy bread, the room filled with joy and connection. Many took photos of their plates, shared food on social media, and even video-called friends back home to show off the “weird” but wonderful snacks they were trying.
It was one of those magical afternoons where no one wanted to leave, and where everyone felt a little more at home in Australia. The power of shared food experiences is truly universal.
