Last Friday afternoon, our student lounge was buzzing with excitement as students gathered for an authentic Aussie beer tasting experience. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long week, with plenty of laughter, camaraderie, and, of course, a variety of iconic Australian beers to try.
We had a fantastic selection of five well-known Australian beers for the tasting: Victoria Bitter, Carlton Draught, XXXX Gold, Stone & Wood, and 4 Pines. Each brand brought its own unique flavor and history to the table, giving students a true taste of Australia’s beer culture.
The Beers
Victoria Bitter (VB)
Victoria Bitter, or VB as it’s commonly called, is one of Australia’s most iconic beers. Known for its bold, bitter flavor, it has a distinct malty taste with a clean, crisp finish. Students noted its strong, robust flavor, which makes it popular among those who enjoy a more traditional beer experience. While not the favorite of the day, it came in as a strong second.
Carlton Draught
This is a classic, easy-drinking lager with a smooth, balanced flavor. It has a mild bitterness and a light, refreshing taste, making it a go-to choice for many Australians. While students appreciated its straightforward flavor, it didn’t stand out as much compared to some of the other beers in the lineup.
XXXX Gold
A Queensland favorite, XXXX Gold is known for its lighter alcohol content and easy-drinking style. It’s a golden lager with a slightly sweet taste and a crisp finish. Students described it as a pleasant and refreshing beer, ideal for a hot day. However, its lighter body didn’t make it a top contender in the tasting session.
Stone & Wood Pacific Ale
The star of the tasting was undoubtedly Stone & Wood Pacific Ale. Brewed in Byron Bay, this beer is famous for its fruity, tropical notes and light, refreshing finish. Students loved the bright, citrusy flavors and the smooth, natural taste. It was the clear winner of the day, with most students voting it as their favorite.
4 Pines Pale Ale
4 Pines Pale Ale offered a hoppy, aromatic experience with a slight bitterness. This beer has a complex flavor profile, featuring notes of citrus and pine. While a few students enjoyed its bold and adventurous taste, it wasn’t as widely preferred as Stone & Wood or Victoria Bitter.
The Verdict
After tasting each beer and discussing their characteristics, students voted on their favorite. The majority chose Stone & Wood, praising its refreshing and fruity flavor. Victoria Bitter came in second place, appealing to those who enjoy a stronger, more traditional beer. It was a fun and interactive afternoon that gave everyone a chance to learn more about Australia’s beloved beer culture.
We look forward to more student events like this in the future, where we can explore new flavors and share unforgettable moments!
Cheers!
