Noosa – Halloween cupcake decorating – 1st November

On Friday last week, the students decorated cupcakes for Halloween.

It’s that time of year! Halloween has rolled back around so of course; we chose a Halloween themed activity.

The cupcakes were homemade by teacher Jessie and then the students got creative decorating them with different coloured fondants.

Here’s what some of the cupcakes looked like. Each student chose their own design and decorated them however they liked, there were no rules except of course, that their creations were to be Halloween themed.

As you can see, the students had a blast creating different shapes and designs with coloured fondant. The students had to roll and cut the coloured fondant into different shapes and sizes to make the decoration they wanted with a little help from Jessie.

Most students decorated their cupcakes using traditional Halloween inspiration, however one of the students decided to create an Australian Halloween themed design. She created a human shark attack on her cupcake, something that she feels is scarier than a ghost or vampire.

Above is the finished product of the cupcakes. The decorations look incredible and more importantly, the students reported that they tasted even better.

The students had so much fun getting creative with Halloween cupcake decorating.

Noosa – Wine and cheese tasting – 24th October

Last Friday we combined the two most delicious things, wine and cheese.

For our activity last week, our Student Services Coordinator Kira organised wine and cheese tasting for the students. It was a great turn out and a perfect way to end the week.

There was a selection of 4 wines and a choice of apple juice for those wanting something non-alcoholic and a selection of 4 different types of cheese.

The selection of wine included: a French Rose, Tasmanian Pinot Noir, South Australian Sav Blanc, a Chardonnay from Western Australia and of course a non-alcoholic choice of apple juice.

The selection of cheese included: double brie, Swiss cheese, blue cheese and soft cheddar.

The Sav Blanc was a clear favourite, along with the brie cheese, however each student had their own opinion on the different flavours.

It was a lovely afternoon and a perfect opportunity for the students to chat and meet new people. We had some great conversations and a lot of laughs.

Overall, wine and cheese tasting was a success and the students loved the relaxed vibe before heading into the weekend.

Noosa – Delicious Aussie BBQ – 18th October

On Monday, the students experienced a classic Aussie BBQ!

On Monday, the teachers decided to organise an Aussie BBQ for the students. It was a perfect afternoon for a barbie!

In Australia, we like to shorten our words and use slang as much as possible so often you might find a barbeque being referred to as a ‘barbie.’ And you might hear a sausage being referred to as a ‘snag.’

The BBQ was cooked professionally by teacher Rob as the students lined up to try a snag in bread. The students enjoyed sausages on bread with onion, and a choice of mustard, barbeque and tomato sauce. Some of our Cambridge students were very lucky and were able to try some kangaroo meat cooked especially for them as promised by Deb, their teacher.

A true Aussie barbie is quite casual and is used as an opportunity to catch up with friends and family. Usually, in true Aussie style, a cold beer or another alcoholic drink is involved.

The Brazilian students are very familiar with barbeques as they are huge in Brazil, they claim that Brazilian BBQ’s are even better than Aussie ones!

The students had a great time socialising with their friends and were very happy to take a break from class and relax for the last half of the afternoon, especially for the Cambridge students after their mid-year exams.

It was an enjoyable, relaxing afternoon!

Noosa – Making delicious sushi – 10th October

On Friday our students got to make sushi!

On Friday, our students made sushi with Kira and Aya, who is a student from Japan. Aya makes sushi for her family back home in Japan, so she is an expert! She did an amazing job at preparing the ingredients and assisting the students to roll the sushi.

The ingredients were placed on the table so the students could make their sushi with their preferred fillings. The filling options included avocado, cucumber, lettuce, canned tuna, fresh tuna and fresh salmon with a choice of condiments including, kewpie mayo, wasabi, vinegar and soy sauce.

Some of the students had made sushi before, for others it was their first time.

Rolling the sushi was the most challenging part but our students had so much fun and enjoyed eating it even more.

Noosa – Fascinating snake and reptile show – 28th September

This week our students attended a snake and reptile show!

Many people fear Australia due to some of the animals that we have living in our country. Well, this week the students had the opportunity to face their fears and learn that actually, some are not as scary or as deadly as most first think.

This week our teachers gave the students a little break from class to go and see a snake and reptiles show that was happening close to our campus. During the presentation, the students were shown three different species of snakes and three different species of lizards. A fun fact we learnt at the show was that only 3-4 people die from a snake bite per year! A lot less than most people expect.

The students learnt so much about some of our Australian snake and lizards while being able to have a close look at them too. After the presentation, the students had the opportunity to hold a snake! Some of the students were brave, others watched them be brave from afar.
None of these snakes were dangerous and all of the species that were shown are common Australian pets.

Some of the reactions and facial expressions were priceless!

The students loved the seeing the show and getting up close and personal with the animals (well most of them). It was a perfect way to introduce them to some of the native Australian animals and add to their studying experience in Australia!
