Byron Bay – Delicious Alcoholic Summer Drinks Tasting – 8 December 2023

This Friday we spent the afternoon in the sunshine trying some of the best alcoholic beverages Australia has to offer!

In recent years, the trend of alcoholic seltzers and fizzes has experienced a notable upswing in Australia. These effervescent beverages represent a shift in drinking preferences. With an increasing number of consumers opting for lighter and lower-calorie options, alcoholic seltzers align with health-conscious choices. The market has responded with a surge in innovative flavors and brands, providing a refreshing twist to traditional alcoholic beverages.  We tried four drinks:

  • Little Dragon Ginger Beer
  • Brookvale Union Lemon Lime Bitters
  • Hard Fizz – Watermelon and Berry
  • Sommersby Apple Cider

Alcoholic Summer Drink #1 Brookvale Union Lemon Lime Bitters

This version of the ever popular lemon lime and bitters drink is made alcoholic by the addition of vodka. Created in Manly by Brookvale Union, the drink is described as ‘classic yet classy, easy but fresh, breezy but smooth, bitter but sweet’ and contains 4% abv.

Fooled by the pink colour, some of our students mistook it for the Hard Fizz and thought that they could taste watermelon flavours. Overall, though everyone enjoyed the drink.

Alcoholic Summer Drink #2 Little Dragon Ginger Beer

The second tasting was the ever popular Little Dragons, created by local brewery ‘Stone and Wood’. Little Dragon is a refreshing Aussie take on alcoholic ginger beer. It’s gluten-free, made with natural ginger and has 4% abv.

A good reason for backing Little Dragon is their charitable contributions. The brand actively support independent wildlife workers, environmental advocacy groups and film makers and have donated just over $20,000 to the Australian Wildlife Conservancy. Their future aim is to donate 1% of all net revenue back to similar foundations and charities every financial year.

Alcoholic Summer Drink #3 Hard Fizz – Watermelon and Berry

The third tasting was Hard Fizz- Watermelon and Berry flavour.

Hard Fizz was created by one of the biggest Australian DJs of all time – Paul Fisher AKA FISHER and comes in a wide range of flavours including Lychee & Apple, Orange & Mango, Passionfruit & Guava and Tropical Pineapple.

Hard Fizz drinks also come in alcoholic and non-alcoholic varieties and are marketed as being ‘for enjoying the day after just as much as the night before’  and ‘with functional ingredients to benefit your mind and body’.

The Watermelon and Berry drink we tasted is described as ‘watermelon freshness with the kick of berry’. With only 77 Calories and being  99% Sugar Free, Gluten Free, and Vegan Friendly, it’s practically a health beverage despite its 4% abv.

Summer Drinks Tasting

Alcoholic Summer Drink #4 Sommersby Apple Cider

The final tasting was Sommersby Apple Cider, an invigorating and refreshing drink made from quality fermented apple juice and natural apple flavouring. Made in Australia, it’s described as a ‘European inspired cider, with a scent of lovely sun-ripened summer apples and the taste finishes with a sweet apple flavour’ and was the most alcoholic drink at 4.5% abv.

The students received a card to describe their drinks (choosing which flavours they could tastes from ginger, watermelon, raspberry, caramel, bitters, lemon and apples) and to rate them out of five. Perhaps surprisingly, the Sommersby Apple Cider was the overall winner, while the Little Dragon Ginger Beer was the least popular.

We cant wait to try even more Australian beverages at our next drinks tasting!
